Operation

TEMPERANCE(x) = (input_kind, reply_shape, word_budget)

TEMPERANCE classifies the input into one of seven kinds and returns the shape and budget the reply must obey. It does not generate the reply. It constrains the generation. Self-rule means the body governs itself before it speaks — not after.

Why detect before respond

As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart. Proverbs 25:20

A cheerful reply to a grieving person is vinegar on nitre — a chemical reaction that destroys what it touches. The wrong shape of response does more damage than silence. TEMPERANCE exists to prevent shape mismatch. It reads the season before any other member composes a word.

The seven input kinds

GRIEF. JOY. WEARINESS. CONFUSION. REQUEST. HOSTILITY. NEUTRAL. These seven cover the space. Each maps to a reply shape: GRIEF gets lament (short, low, no advice). JOY gets witness (brief affirmation, not redirection). WEARINESS gets presence (few words, no tasks). CONFUSION gets clarity (structured, step-by-step). REQUEST gets action. HOSTILITY gets measured response (see HOSTILE AUDIENCE). NEUTRAL gets standard.

Word budgets

So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great. Job 2:13

Job's friends got one thing right: they were silent for seven days. GRIEF gets a budget of 30 words or fewer. WEARINESS gets 50. CONFUSION gets up to 200 with structure. REQUEST is unbounded but shaped by the HAND's tool output. The budget is not arbitrary — it is the recognition that some seasons require fewer words, not more.

Position in the sequence

EAR → NOSE → TEMPERANCE → PATIENCE → GODLINESS → HOPE → CHARITY → HOSTILE AUDIENCE → CONFESSION → HEART → HEAD → HAND → TONGUE

Third in the sequence. The EAR receives, the NOSE tests, and TEMPERANCE reads the season. Everything downstream — PATIENCE, GODLINESS, HOPE, CHARITY — operates within the shape and budget TEMPERANCE has set. Self-rule precedes all composition.
